The five foundations of health—digestion, blood sugar regulation, hydration, mineral balance, and fatty acid balance—are especially important for men’s hormonal and prostate health because hormones do not work in isolation. They are influenced by the overall balance and function of the body.

Healthy testosterone production and hormone regulation depend on these systems working well together. One important example is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a more potent form of testosterone. DHT is produced when testosterone is converted by an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, primarily in tissues such as the prostate, skin, hair follicles, and liver. This conversion is a normal and important part of male physiology, but its activity and impact are influenced by overall metabolic and inflammatory balance in the body.

These foundational systems also play a major role in regulating inflammation, urinary function, and prostate tissue health. When the body is supported in these areas, it creates a healthier internal environment for hormone balance and prostate function.

Strong foundations help support balanced hormones, healthy testosterone activity, and long-term prostate wellness.

Firstly, what are some of the key hormones in men’s health?

Testosterone: Influences muscle strength and lean mass, libido and erectile function, motivation/drive, mood and confidence, bone density and red blood cell production. Low testosterone may contribute to fatigue, low libido, loss of muscle, increased belly fat, brain fog and depression.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate): Is an adrenal precursor to androgens and estrogens. It supports vitality, resilience, libido and recovery. Low DHEA may be due to chronic stress, aging and burnout.

Cortisol: Stress hormone from adrenal glands. A healthy cortisol level gives you morning energy, stable blood sugar and good resilience. Symptoms can arise when cortisol levels are imbalanced.

Estrogen (yep, it applies to men!): Men need estrogen for bone health, libido and vascular function. Too much estrogen can contribute to belly fat, low libido and gynecomastia (enlargement of men’s breasts).

Thyroid hormones – low thyroid can mimic low testosterone which can lead to fatigue, weight gain, brain fog and low motivation.

Let’s look at the Foundations….

DIGESTION

Like for everyone, healthy digestion determines whether a man can absorb the nutrients needed for hormone production and prostate function.

Digestion and hormones

Healthy digestion plays an essential role in hormone production and balance. In order to make and regulate sex hormones properly, the body must be able to absorb key nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, selenium, cholesterol from healthy fats, and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

When digestion is compromised—whether from low stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), poor pancreatic enzyme output, or other digestive imbalances—nutrient absorption can be reduced, making it harder for the body to build and maintain healthy hormone levels.

For example, low zinc levels may contribute to reduced testosterone production, while poor fat digestion can interfere with the production of steroid hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. In addition, gut dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria) can influence how hormones—particularly estrogen—are metabolized and cleared from the body.

Digestion and Prostate Health

Healthy digestion plays an important role in prostate health because the gut has a major influence on inflammation, immune function, and hormone balance.

When the gut is out of balance, it is often referred to as gut dysbiosis, or an imbalance of beneficial and harmful bacteria—it can contribute to increased inflammation throughout the body. This may lead to a higher inflammatory burden, increased toxin exposure, and greater immune system activation.

Over time, chronic inflammation can negatively affect prostate health and may contribute to issues such as pelvic inflammation, urinary discomfort, and prostate enlargement.

Common signs that digestion may need support include symptoms that are common but far from normal: Bloating, acid reflux (due to low stomach acid vs too much), gas, constipation, diarrhea and food sensitivities or reactions.

When digestion is functioning well, the body is better able to absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, and maintain the internal balance needed for optimal prostate health.

BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION

Blood sugar regulation is one of the most important foundations of men’s health because it has a direct impact on hormones, metabolism, and prostate health.

When blood sugar is frequently elevated or unstable, the body often produces more insulin to compensate. Over time, this can contribute to insulin resistance, a state in which the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin.

Insulin resistance is closely linked to an increase in visceral fat. Unlike fat stored just under the skin, visceral fat is metabolically active and can significantly influence hormone balance. It contains an enzyme called aromatase, which converts testosterone into estrogen.

As this hormone shift occurs, men may begin to experience symptoms such as:

  • Increased belly fat
  • Lower libido
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Difficulty building or maintaining strength

Blood sugar dysregulation can also affect prostate health. Elevated insulin levels and ongoing inflammation may contribute to prostate enlargement, worsening urinary symptoms, and increased inflammatory stress within the body.

MINERAL BALANCE

Mineral balance is a foundational part of men’s health and plays a key role in supporting hormones, metabolism, and prostate function.

Minerals act as essential building blocks and cofactors for many processes in the body, including hormone production, energy metabolism, immune function, and cellular repair. Even mild deficiencies can affect how efficiently these systems’ function.

One of the most important minerals for men is zinc. In fact, the prostate contains some of the highest concentrations of zinc in the body. FATTY ACID BALANCE

Healthy fats are especially important for men because steroid hormones, including testosterone, are made from cholesterol. Adequate intake of healthy fats helps support testosterone production, cell membrane integrity, healthy cell signaling, and overall hormone balance.

The quality and balance of fats also influence inflammation. A diet excessively high in omega-6 fats, especially from highly processed seed oils such as canola, sunflower, soybean, corn, and rapeseed oils, may promote inflammatory pathways when consumed in excess—particularly when omega-3 intake is low.

On the other hand, omega-3 fatty acids help support a healthy inflammatory response and play an important role in cardiovascular health, triglyceride balance, circulation, and vascular function. This is especially important for men, as metabolic and cardiovascular health are closely tied to both hormone health and prostate health.

Excellent food sources of omega-3s include SMASH fish—sardines, mackerel, anchovies, salmon, and herring—as well as walnuts and flaxseeds.

Healthy fat intake and proper fatty acid balance help support hormone production, reduce inflammation, and promote long-term metabolic and prostate health.

HYDRATION

Hydration is often overlooked, yet it plays a vital role in energy, hormone balance, recovery, and prostate health.

Even mild chronic dehydration can place stress on the body and contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, headaches, and poor exercise recovery. When the body is under stress, it may produce more cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Over time, chronically elevated cortisol can interfere with healthy hormone balance and may suppress testosterone, DHEA, and the body’s ability to recover and repair.

Hydration is also especially important for prostate and urinary health. Adequate fluid intake helps support healthy urinary flow and helps the bladder function more comfortably and efficiently.

At the same time, hydration is about balance, not simply drinking excessive amounts of water. Too little fluid can strain the body, while drinking large amounts—especially later in the evening—may worsen nighttime urination in some men.

Proper hydration supports healthy hormones, better energy, improved recovery, and optimal urinary and prostate function.

Stress and sleep and movement matters!

Stress, sleep, and movement all play a major role in supporting healthy hormones in men.

Chronic stress can place significant strain on the body and disrupt hormone balance over time. When stress becomes ongoing, the body may produce elevated levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Persistently high cortisol can suppress important hormones such as testosterone, DHEA, and even thyroid function, all of which are essential for energy, metabolism, mood, and overall vitality.

Sleep is another critical factor for hormone health. Poor sleep—or conditions such as sleep apnea—can be one of the biggest disruptors of healthy hormone production. This is especially important because testosterone is primarily produced and regulated during deep, restorative sleep. When sleep quality is poor or consistently interrupted, testosterone levels can decline, contributing to fatigue, low libido, reduced recovery, brain fog, and difficulty maintaining muscle mass.

Regular movement, particularly resistance training, can be one of the most effective natural ways to support healthy testosterone levels. Strength training helps stimulate muscle growth and improves the body’s ability to use glucose efficiently, which supports better insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation. It also helps reduce visceral fat, increase lean muscle mass, and promote more stable energy throughout the day.

Managing stress, prioritizing quality sleep, and engaging in regular strength-based exercise create a powerful foundation for healthy hormones, better energy, and long-term metabolic health.
